seeing us, seeing

Seeing Us Seeing is a work of Afro-surrealism that explores black exceptionalism. It highlights the positives of a black identity while also challenging and counteracting stereotypes in contemporary art. By collaging handmade materials, advertising magazines, and archival photographs of my family, I create a connection that spans generations. The work serves as an immortalization of the essence of their lives, drawing a comparison to Roman and Greek statues. Just as those statues were meant to immortalize the myths and figures of their history, they represent, to me, a time when our families built the foundations of their history. All the while living in a world that rejected them based on their skin color. They lived their lives with excellence and preserved their culture as Black Americans.
